Solving The Mystery Of The Leaky Roof

How Mattsson Roofing Traces Roof Leaks: A Step-by-Step Process by Erik Mattsson

At Mattsson Roofing, one of our key services is tracing leaks to pinpoint their source and provide long-term solutions. As Erik Mattsson, owner of Mattsson Roofing, explains, finding and fixing leaks requires a combination of creativity, investigative skills, and thoroughness. Here’s a real-life example of how we address roof leaks.

Step 1: Investigating the Source of the Leak

The first step in finding a leak is investigating the attic. By inspecting the attic, we can identify where the water is coming in. In this case, I found that the leak was located about five feet from the side wall and three feet up from the fascia board. Knowing the general location of the leak in the attic helps us measure and trace where the problem might be on the roof's exterior.

Step 2: Locating the Leak on the Roof

Once the measurement is marked on the roof, it’s time to lift the shingles in the suspected area. During this inspection, I found a common culprit for leaks: a nail pop. This nail had come loose and was hidden underneath the shingle, making it tricky to spot. When shingles lift or come loose from the roof, the nails underneath become exposed. Over time, if a nail pops up, it can create a channel for water to seep through, especially during heavy rainstorms.

Step 3: Fixing the Problem

In this case, the nail pop caused a slow, consistent drip in the home. By pulling out the nail and sealing the area, we could stop water from getting into the roof structure and causing further damage. I like to say, "X marks the spot," as finding the leak is often the most challenging part of the job, but it’s also the most satisfying.

The Art of Leak Tracing

At Mattsson Roofing, we treat every leak like a puzzle. It requires a sharp eye, a thorough approach, and creative problem-solving to figure out exactly where the water is coming from. As experienced roofing installers, we carefully inspect every potential entry point. Once we find the issue, we seal it up, fix the problem, and ensure your roof is watertight again. We take pride in delivering lasting solutions to protect your home.
